SO I bought "So You Wanna Be an Embedded Engineer: The Guide to Embedded Engineering, From Consultancy to the Corporate Ladder" ( amazon.com link ) by Lewin Edwards and it arrived over the weekend. Last night I sat down with it and got a decent way in.
Chapter 2 of the book talks about different 8-bit microprocessors/microcontrollers including the 8051 microcontroller. The 8051 is "the worlds best selling microprocessor core..", and can be found in almost anything that uses a smaller application specific embedded system such as VCRs, Car cruise control, microwaves, etc. These systems don't require the pure number crunching power of 16- or 32-bit processors.
For a number of years I have been interested in 80c51s since I found a number of them in an old lab at Clarkson (which I still have). I thought I would share some links to info about the 8051...so enjoy.

Gizmodo.com( http://gizmodo.com/ ) is running an article in which they have information from a number of ‘secret sources’ high up in Apple who have said the next generation iPod will be released in November and "will definitely feature a touchscreen".
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets//touchsc...OMG.BIG.URL
If I had to give one statement about the touchscreen, and if it would be incorporated into the next-gen iPod I would have to say...”Duh!”. It’s the next logical step in the progression:
Play music
Play music in color
Play music & view pictures
Play music, view pictures, watch video podcasts
BusinessGuy1: "What’s next??"
BusinessGuy2: "Lets get rid of the buttons, expand the screen, make it touch, play full movies and games like that PSP thing!"
BusinessGuy1: "Ooooooo, I want one"
Honestly, if this is the way it goes, Apple might as well just develop an embedded OS, put on a web browser, interface it with a phone and bingo, the Windows Mobile Killer
Oh wait….

William Cox from over at GoRobotics.net is vice president of the NCSU Underwater Robotics club. This week they are out in San Diego at the AUVSI and ONR's 9th International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition from August 2nd through 6th.
William has posted some info on the competition and their team on his site ( http://www.gorobotics.net ), the article can be viewed here:

On Tuesday August 1st IBM announced the next generation in its System X family of servers based on the dual-core Rev-F AMD Opteron. In a market dominated by Intel until recent years, AMD is making headway in the acquisition of larger processor market-share.
ZDNet is reporting the new x3455, x3655 and x3755 servers will ship within three months running the new Rev-F AMD Opteron dual-core AMD64 chip. The Rev-F chip from AMD is a dual-core processor using the Socket F form factor expected to be released within the next few months, with a quad-core processor slated for release early in 2007.
This is a major milestone for AMD as the juggernaut that is IBM is a nice partner to have in the battle of Intel v. AMD for server market-share.

Embedded.com ran an article on July 11th about Intel ending their x86 product line. From the article:
"After more than 20 years, Intel is pulling the plug on its embedded x86 processors. The '186, '286, '386, and '486 will cease production in a few months, going to that great motherboard in the sky"

So I was poking around embedded.com, reading some of the back articles from the magazine and stumbled across some of the April Fools articles. I was crying I was laughing so hard. The perfect item to post here, it is definitely “crazy stuffz”
The only thing I wonder as I read these is who comes up with this stuff. Then again, I think to myself ‘I am getting it all and thinking it’s funny…COOL!’
