s1axter GICB Explanation S1axter's Tech Log of Crazy Stuff

Welcome to the GICB project, the blood of Geeksinside.

GICB is the GeeksInside Code Base, PHP classes that I have created to run Geeksinside. Over the past few weeks, the code for Geeksinside has looked better than it ever has before. All database connections are managed, a set of classes can be instantiated with the creation of a single instance of a base class, classes provide functions for things like News, Files and Polls, etc, etc. In short, it looks good enough to use.

At the time of this post, the classes are not totally done. What is still left is some database management functions for the Files and Project classes, but it is 80% there (hence the project % value). As things come closer to a release I will put up more news.

Until then

s1axter Sunglass Mounted Display S1axter's Tech Log of Crazy Stuff

This is a really awesome sunglass mounted display. There are a number of providers of head mounted displays, but not many that can incorporate them inside a set of sunglasses.

I would love to have a set of glasses with a display built in. It would be the ultimate way of being 'connected'. Combined with a small computer and the internet services from the cell companies you could have instant notification when you get an email. OR, combine this with some headphones and you can have an entire multi-media system, on your face!

Looks like he used parts from an older TekGear M1 for his projects. TekGear sells head mounted displays, but most look a little bulky and they are priced around $2,000. Someone technically inclined could purchase the LCD part and just hack together something cool.

Something interesting, this is the guy why runs http://imakeprojects.com he should do more projects like this

s1axter Windows 2000 isn't cool enough S1axter's Tech Log of Crazy Stuff

(I know this is probally a little dated, and everyone knows it, but it's news to me...)

It seems that Windows 2000 isn't cool enough to get Internet Explorer 7. Not that I really want IE7, but I would like to know if the program that is being pushed ( http://it.slashdot.org/it/06/07/27/0141207.shtml ) to the entire windows community is going to render the site like crap. The minimum requirements for IE7 are Windows XP SP2, Windows XP x64, or Windows Server 2003 SP1. Why?

If you have ever read my news on here you should know I really don't care for Microsoft, from a tech point of view, most of their products are shoddy, from a personal point of view, I think they are evil. That aside, Windows 2000 is the best thing to come out of big-ole-moneybags. It runs smooth, it doesn't try and do everything for you. I personally would love it if the world ran Windows 2000. But alas, it cannot and people are stuck, forced to upgrade or get left behind.

Later all :-P

s1axter Geeksinside Code Base Overhaul AGAIN! S1axter's Tech Log of Crazy Stuff

So Geeksinside.com is (yet again) getting a code overhaul. The last code revision back in like April or May brovided a solid base for the site. However due to time restrictions I wasn't able to make the code as clean as I could have (hense the problems moving between servers). Well this past week I have been getting the code up to par.

The last revision added object based code to the site, this revision I am finishing that up. The site you are looking at right now is totally TRUELY object oriented. A lot of the minor code for the site (like update articles, add new articles, etc) was application specific, NO flexibility. This time I have objects as members of objects, objects are passed by reference, all database connections are managed, etc. This allows me to do some cool stuff as I'm sure you can tell by looking at it.

If you get bored and want to waste some time let me know what you think on the forum.

Later!

s1axter LEGOs, Robots and Microsoft...Oh My! S1axter's Tech Log of Crazy Stuff

So it looks like Microsoft has found another little market it wants to work its way into, Robotics. A number of weeks a go M$ released their "Robotics Studio" software package which "which offers end-to-end robotics development environment customer technical preview for hobbyist, academic, and commercial developers" (aka, it does it all, for everyone). http://msdn.microsoft.com/robotics/

Now any good embedded systems person knows that there CAN'T be a do-it-all software system. Different processor architectures require different compilers...and I seriously doubt this developer suite has a VHDL synthesis tool and waveform analyzer in it....

Anyway, since big-money-bags M$ is really pushing Robotics they had a "Big Robot on Campus" even at their main headquarters. One of the hardware makers they are really targeting is Lego. This shouldn't be too surprising; Lego provides a cheap, fun way to get involved in system programming and mobile base construction. I remember working with the Mindstorm kit in high school and boy was that fun. But that’s where it stopped, high school.

I’ll stop before I really go on a rant, lol. Check out some of the pictures of the bots that were at the event, I personally like the one that is interfaced with a cell phone http://news.com.com/Lego+robots+marc....bigURL...

What do you think? Talk about it in the forum http://gi.phoenixarisen.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=47#47

s1axter Something quick and interesting... S1axter's Tech Log of Crazy Stuff

It seems that if you search for "search" using google. The first page that comes up, the page visited when you click 'I'm feeling Lucky' is actually the MSN search page. I have no idea if this is intentional or Microsoft has mastered the Google Bomb http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_bomb

Google is still my number one pick for search engines.

s1axter New poll...relocation partD S1axter's Tech Log of Crazy Stuff

So I put a new poll up, about work, should be fun to see what people say. Curently I am waiting to get the hosting up and running. Once that happens I will have total free reign on the site.

I don\'t think it is appropriate to make mention of Office Space without a real life Office Space clip. This is one of the more famous clips on the net and I know (or at least hope) that almost everyone has seen it....but it doesn't get old. (Sometimes i feel like this guy)
